Catherine

Catherine was born and raised south of Hobart in Tasmania where she spent most of her time studying classical piano. In her free time besides performing on the piano both solo and with small ensembles, she played clarinet and sang with various groups and choirs.

She began dancing upon moving to Sydney and progressed to teaching bellydance for the Dreaming of Jeannie Bellydance Academy where she performed at restaurants, festivals and charity events.

Catherine started learning salsa in 2001 and began teaching with Walter Alvarez later that year. Catherine and Walter taught for the Latin American Dance Association (a non-profit organisation) until the end of 2005. They have taught salsa and tango together at many Sydney venues, in the past having organised regular social dances for both.

Catherine has a strong teaching background, both musical, dancing, corporate and academic and this shows through in her teaching. Her instructions are clear and precise and her emphasis on developing a good latin hip-motion, with correct technique will help you well along on your street latin journey.

Walter

Walter was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. Music and dancing are part of the way of life in Latin America.

Dancing is both a form of personal expression, social interaction and cultural identity. Music and dancing are an integral part of every Latin American social gathering.

Walter has been teaching salsa since 1993, firstly for his mentor Jose Prates ("El Profesor" who was arguably responsible for the development of the Sydney salsa scene) and has performed at functions and events throughout Sydney.

For 10 years Walter was President of the Latin American Dance Association, which he founded in 1996. This remains the longest running latin dance school in Sydney.
