Welcome to El Bailongo!

Bailongo is a Spanish word that refers to a social dance of an unpretentious nature.
In Latin America, the upper classes desire to emulate Western/European culture and this is reflected in the social dancing where rock-and-roll, jive and swing were incorporated into "salsa" which apart from in Cuba, traditionally does not include complicated turn patterns. Salsa as danced in most parts of the world outside of Latin America has been heavily influenced by ballroom latin and has become a competition sport.

The lower classes in Latin America retain a desire for traditional music and culture. Their social dances contain traditional music rather than music with a western influence. Including foreign music in social dancing is considered to be pretentious by the common people.

At El Bailongo, we teach Tango Argentino (Argentine Tango), Milonga and Vals (other "tango" dances), old fashioned Puerto Rican style based salsa, Miami and Cuban style based Casino (salsa) and Rueda de Casino (group salsa dancing), Merengue and Lambada (not Zouk-Lambada) in our dance studio in Tempe, Sydney Australia.

We're about the love of dancing. We dance to have fun with friends and family, to enjoy the music and share the dance with another person. We'd like to share with you our enjoyment of unpretentious, traditional latin dance!

We look forward to meeting you,
